The Witcher began as Andrzej Sapkowski's short stories, which take fairy tales and ask what they would look like if the consequences were real. The games then turned that into one of the best-realised fantasy worlds in the medium.

Geralt is a mutant monster hunter who is constantly asked to make moral choices with no correct answer, and the series' great achievement is refusing to grade them. Wild Hunt in particular is full of quests where the kind option produces a worse outcome, and the game never tells you which was which.

The two swords are the most misunderstood detail: steel for humans, silver for monsters, and the ongoing joke in the books is that humans are the more frequent problem.
