Collection RoboCop

RoboCop is frequently remembered as an action film and it is actually a very angry satire. Paul Verhoeven made a movie about a privatised police force, a city sold off to a corporation, and a dead man reprocessed into equipment, and he wrapped it in enough gunfire that a lot of people missed the argument.

The satire is not subtle once you see it. The fake adverts, the news segments, the boardroom where a malfunctioning robot kills an executive and everyone continues the meeting - it's Verhoeven doing what he'd later do with Starship Troopers.

The design is genuinely iconic. Rob Bottin's suit is heavy, awkward and clearly a product rather than armour, and Peter Weller learned to move like something being operated rather than worn.

The Auto 9 pistol and the thigh holster mechanism are among the most copied bits of sci-fi hardware design there are.
