Fairy Tail is a shonen series about a guild that causes more property damage than the villains it fights. Hiro Mashima built the whole thing on one idea - that the family you choose is worth burning a city down for - and then committed to it completely for eleven years.

The magic system is generous rather than strict. Natsu eats fire, Lucy summons celestial spirits through contracted keys, Gray makes ice out of nothing, and Erza changes armour mid-swing depending on what needs hitting. It's less a rulebook than a toybox, and the fights are all the better for it.

What made the series stick was the guild itself. Fairy Tail's hall is loud, drunk, constantly on fire, and absolutely unified the moment one of its own is threatened. The running joke is that they're terrible at their jobs. The actual point is that none of them will ever be alone again.
