The Legend of Vox Machina exists because a Dungeons & Dragons livestream ran a crowdfunding campaign that raised over eleven million dollars in about a month. Critical Role wanted a special; the internet gave them a series.
Adapting a tabletop campaign into animation is harder than it sounds - the source material is hundreds of hours of improvisation, most of it tangents. The show's solution was to keep the character voices and the crude humour intact while tightening the plot considerably, and it works.
Grog Strongjaw is the best argument for the whole project. An enormous barbarian who is dim in a very specific and consistent way, played with obvious affection, and given real emotional beats that a lesser adaptation would have cut.
Keyleth's arc as a druid who does not want the responsibility she's inheriting gives the series its more serious register.
This collection covers Grog, Keyleth and the party.
