Haikyuu!! is the best argument in anime for the sports genre. It's about a volleyball club at a school past its prime, and it manages to make a six-person rotation feel like the most important thing happening anywhere.

The key is that it takes the sport seriously. The tactics are real - blocking systems, sets, reading a spiker's approach - and matches are won by adjustments rather than shouting. Learning volleyball by watching this show is entirely possible and a lot of people did.

Hinata is short, which the series never lets him forget, and his partnership with Kageyama works because they dislike each other and are mechanically perfect together. The quick strike they build is the closest thing the show has to a special move.

Karasuno's whole roster gets development, including the players who mostly sit down, which is unusually generous plotting.
