Collection Game of Thrones

For most of a decade Game of Thrones was the closest thing television had to a shared global event. It normalised the idea that a fantasy series could be prestige drama, and it did it by being ruthless with characters the audience had been trained to consider safe.

The politics were the real draw. Westeros works because every house has a motive, a grudge and a claim, and the show trusted viewers to keep track of all of it. The battles were spectacular but the conversations in small rooms were better.

Jon Snow's arc - bastard, brother of the Night's Watch, and then several things he never asked for - made him the audience's anchor, and Longclaw is one of the more effective prop designs in the series.

The final season is its own conversation, one the internet has had extensively and will presumably continue having.
