Collection Predator

Predator starts as an eighties action film about a squad of extremely muscular men in a jungle, and then methodically removes them one at a time until it becomes a horror film about a single hunter. That genre shift mid-film is the whole trick.

The creature design is one of the best in cinema, and it nearly wasn't - the original suit was scrapped entirely and Stan Winston rebuilt it from scratch, reportedly with a suggestion from James Cameron about mandibles. Everything about the final version says predator: the dreadlocks, the mask, the thermal vision, the trophy-taking.

The rules matter more than the monster. It hunts for sport, it takes skulls, and it won't attack the unarmed - which is what turns the third act into a fair fight rather than a chase.

The cloaking effect, achieved practically with a distorted suit and careful compositing, still reads better than a lot of modern digital invisibility.
