The zodiac is roughly two and a half thousand years old, which makes it one of humanity's longest-running systems for explaining why someone is like that. Babylonian astronomers divided the sky into twelve segments along the sun's path, and we've been assigning personality traits to them ever since.

Whether or not you believe any of it, the symbolism is beautifully designed. A ram, a bull, twins, a crab, a lion, a maiden, scales, a scorpion, an archer, a sea-goat, a water bearer and two fish - twelve images that stayed legible for millennia and still fit inside a small icon.

The staying power probably comes from the fact that people enjoy being described. Ask someone their sign and they'll tell you, then immediately tell you which parts of the description are wrong. That's a more engaging conversation than most.
