Collection Final Space

Final Space opens as a goofy space comedy about a chatty idiot serving out a prison sentence alone on a ship, and then it becomes something considerably sadder. Olan Rogers built the whole thing from a web short, and the tonal range is much wider than the first episodes let on.

Gary Goodspeed talks constantly because he has spent five years with nobody to talk to, which reframes the entire comedy once you notice it. Mooncake, the small green creature he adopts, cannot speak at all and is also a planet-destroying superweapon that several empires want.

The Avocato and Little Cato relationship gives the series its emotional spine - a father and son separated by an antagonist's leverage, in a show that is otherwise about a man arguing with a computer.

It is also willing to kill people, permanently, in a way animated comedies usually avoid, and the series is much stronger for the risk.

This collection covers the crew of the Galaxy One. Chookity, obviously.
