Collection Corpse Bride

Corpse Bride is stop-motion animation at an extraordinary level of craft - the first feature shot on digital SLR cameras, with puppets whose faces changed through tiny internal gear mechanisms rather than swapped heads.

The colour scheme is the film's whole argument. The world of the living is grey, stiff and Victorian, full of people concerned with money and propriety. The land of the dead is warm, saturated and full of jazz. Tim Burton has made this point before, but never this cleanly.

Emily is the reason the film has lasted. She's a jilted bride who has waited underground for years, and the story resolves not with her getting what she wants but with her choosing to let it go, which is a much braver ending than the setup implies.

The piano duet between Victor and Emily is the film's best scene and does more characterisation than any dialogue in it.
