The potion flask is one of the most efficient bits of visual shorthand in fantasy. A glass bottle with liquid in it, and the colour tells you everything: red restores you, blue lets you cast, green is probably poison, purple is going to be interesting.

Games codified this so thoroughly that it now works without explanation. Nobody has ever needed a tutorial to understand that the red bottle is the one you drink when things go badly. That's a remarkable amount of meaning carried by a shape and a hue.

The idea is much older than the games, of course. Alchemists spent centuries genuinely trying to distil transformation into liquid form, and while they never managed gold from lead, they did give fantasy its entire aesthetic - the bubbling glass, the cork, the suspicious glow.
