Star Trek has been arguing for a better future since 1966, and it has never really wavered. Gene Roddenberry's premise was that humanity would eventually sort itself out, and the franchise's most enduring episodes are the ones where a problem is solved by talking rather than shooting.

Spock is the character that made it work. A man who has decided that logic is preferable to feeling and is visibly wrong about that, played with enough restraint that the cracks are the whole performance. Leonard Nimoy also invented the Vulcan salute himself, borrowing it from a Hebrew blessing he saw as a child.

The Next Generation gave the franchise its other pole in Picard - a captain who negotiates, reads, and gives speeches good enough to be quoted as actual political philosophy.

The combadge, the delta insignia and the LCARS interface are all superb design work, all instantly identifiable.
