Peppa Pig has been running since 2004 and has quietly become one of the most successful children's properties ever made, in a style so simple it looks like it was drawn in five minutes. The pigs are viewed from the side. Their faces face forward anyway. Nobody minds.
The formula is five minutes long and never varies much: a small domestic situation happens, someone is mildly inconvenienced, everyone falls over laughing, the end. For an audience of four-year-olds, that predictability is the appeal, and for parents there's an unexpected amount of dry humour aimed squarely over the children's heads.
Daddy Pig, it should be noted, is treated with a cheerful cruelty that has become its own internet genre. Peppa herself is bossy in a way that feels accurate to the age group.
