My Little Pony existed as a toy line for decades before Lauren Faust's Friendship Is Magic turned it into something people argued about on the internet. The show's trick was simply taking its own premise seriously - writing actual characters with actual flaws and letting the friendship lessons emerge from that.

The mane six work as an ensemble because each pony is a distinct problem. Twilight over-plans, Rainbow Dash over-commits, Rarity over-invests, Applejack over-works, Fluttershy avoids, and Pinkie Pie is a physics violation with feelings. Put any two of them in a room and you have a story.

Equestria itself got surprisingly deep. Princesses with millennia of history, a dragon economy, changelings, and a villain redemption arc that the show actually earned across multiple seasons.

The fandom it produced was one of the strangest cultural events of the 2010s, and it produced an enormous amount of genuinely good fan art.
