One-Punch Man is built on a joke that should have run out immediately. The hero wins every fight in one hit. There is no tension. And yet it became one of the most beloved series of the last decade, because the joke was never about the fights.

Saitama's problem is boredom. He trained until nothing could challenge him and discovered that the goal was the only thing he'd actually wanted. He's bored, mildly depressed, and mostly concerned with supermarket discounts, which makes him a far funnier protagonist than any amount of power would.

Everyone around him takes the world seriously in ways he cannot. Genos is a cyborg on a revenge quest who upgrades himself constantly and still loses. King is the strongest man alive by reputation and a coward by fact, and his arc is the best sustained gag in the series. The Hero Association ranks everyone by paperwork.

ONE's original webcomic art was crude and the Murata redraw is spectacular, and both versions understand that the punchline needs to be drawn beautifully.
