Hunter x Hunter looks like a cheerful adventure story for about twenty episodes, and then it quietly turns into something else. Yoshihiro Togashi keeps the bright colours and the kid protagonist while writing arcs about assassin families, genocide, and ants that learn philosophy.

The Nen system is a big part of why fans stay so invested. Powers here aren't handed out — they're built from a person's temperament, and the rules are strict enough that fights become puzzles. Gon's stubbornness, Killua's precision, Kurapika's cold focus: each one produces a completely different ability set, and none of it feels arbitrary.

Then there's Hisoka, who exists to remind you that the show is not safe. Bungee Gum has the properties of both rubber and gum, and he says it with the delivery of a man enjoying himself far too much.
