God of War spent three games being about a man screaming at Greek gods, and then in 2018 it did something almost nobody expected: it made Kratos quiet, tired, and responsible for a child.
The reinvention worked because it didn't excuse him. Kratos in the Norse games is the same person who did all of that, and the tension of the series is that he knows exactly what he is and is terrified of his son becoming it. "Do not be sorry. Be better" is a line that only lands because of the six games behind it.
The Leviathan Axe is one of the great weapon designs in gaming. Throwing it and recalling it never stops being satisfying, and the sound it makes returning to his hand is a genuine piece of craft.
The single-shot camera across the whole game, with no cuts, was a technical decision that also does something thematic - you never leave these two alone.
This collection covers Kratos and his weapons.
