Eddsworld began in 2004 as Flash cartoons made by Edd Gould about himself and his friends, and it grew into one of the most beloved independent animation projects on the internet. The humour is fast, absurd and very British, with plots that begin domestically and end in an explosion.
Edd died of leukaemia in 2012 at twenty-three. His friends and collaborators continued the series with his blessing, which is why later episodes carry a weight the earlier ones don't - the project became a memorial that is also still genuinely funny.
The character designs are extremely simple by intention: four figures distinguished mainly by hoodie colour and hairstyle, drawn to be animated quickly by one person. Matt's vanity, Tom's cynicism and Edd's enthusiasm come entirely from writing and voice.
The community around it remains unusually protective and unusually creative, which is the best legacy an animator could ask for.
