Club Penguin was, for a very specific age group, the entire internet. A snowy island, a waddling penguin, a chat filter that made real conversation nearly impossible, and mini-games that were mostly an excuse to buy furniture for an igloo.
It ran from 2005 to 2017 and Disney eventually shut it down, which produced one of the more genuinely emotional online farewells in gaming. Thousands of adults logged in on the final day to stand around a place they hadn't visited in a decade.
The design was clever about safety without being condescending. The filtered chat, the moderation, the fact that nothing bad could really happen to you - it made a virtual world that parents were happy with and children still found space to be creative in.
Puffles were the masterstroke. Small round pets in every colour, requiring almost no maintenance and generating enormous attachment.
This collection covers penguins, puffles and island iconography. Waddle on.
