Clash of Clans is one of the most commercially successful games ever made and its core loop is very old: build a base, train an army, attack someone else's base, wait for a timer. Supercell simply executed it better than anyone.

The clan is what made it stick. Individually the game is a build queue with a countdown, but wars turn it into a scheduled social obligation with people you know, and that transformed a mobile timer into something players organised their weeks around.

The Barbarian is one of the most recognisable mobile game characters in existence, largely thanks to an advertising campaign of unprecedented scale - including a Super Bowl spot with Liam Neeson delivering a revenge monologue about a lost village.

The design also deserves credit for how legible everything is. Every troop, building and level is distinguishable at a glance on a phone screen.
