The origins of the word can be traced back to the Greek term «koryneor» which means "a piece of wood used for making an instrument, or even more simply «cutter». It is believed that this tool was used by ancient Greeks and Romans in the 7th century BC. The first written evidence of it comes from a vase found in Egypt (now kept at the Metropolitan Museum in Cairo) which has been dated to approximately 3150 B.C.
