Collection Shrek

Shrek was made as a deliberate insult to Disney by a studio run by a man who had recently left Disney, and it accidentally became the most beloved animated film of its generation. The satire is genuinely sharp - Duloc is a theme park, Farquaad is a corporate tyrant, and every fairy tale convention gets taken apart.

What keeps it alive is that the emotional core is completely sincere. Underneath the jokes it's a film about someone who has decided in advance that nobody will like him, and it treats that with real tenderness. Fiona's curse resolving the way it does was a genuinely bold ending for 2001.

The supporting cast became the internet's property. Donkey's motormouth, Gingy's brief and traumatic interrogation, and Puss in Boots stealing the second film so effectively that he got his own franchise.

It also won the first-ever Academy Award for Animated Feature, which was arguably the point.
