Dark Souls arrived in 2011 with almost no marketing, no map, no quest log and no explanation, and it created a genre. FromSoftware's insistence on withholding information turned the game into a communal research project.

The difficulty is famous and slightly misunderstood. Dark Souls is not unfair - it's honest. Every enemy is beatable, every death is legible, and the game's actual demand is that you slow down and pay attention. The relief of finally reaching a bonfire is engineered precisely.

Lordran remains one of the best-designed spaces in games. It's one continuous interlocking world that folds back on itself, and the moment a shortcut opens onto somewhere you recognise is the series' signature feeling.

The storytelling is entirely environmental. There are no cutscenes explaining the world - just item descriptions, architecture and a handful of people sitting in ruins laughing at you.
