Call of Duty has been the biggest annual release in gaming for most of two decades, and the reason is the feel of it. The guns have weight, the animations are expensive, and the moment-to-moment shooting is tuned to an extraordinary degree by studios who have done nothing else for years.

Modern Warfare is the entry that mattered most. Moving the series out of World War II in 2007 reset the entire genre, and the multiplayer progression system it introduced - unlocks, killstreaks, prestige - is now simply how competitive shooters work.

Ghost is the character who escaped the games. A skull-print balaclava and almost no backstory, which is exactly why he became the series' most recognisable figure and eventually its mascot.

Warzone added the battle royale layer and turned the franchise into something people play for years between releases rather than months.
